Do
you have any home repairs that you have let slide merely
because you don’t know who to call?
Or perhaps
you don’t know a trustworthy contractor? Most people get
the name of someone from a neighbor, a friend, a family
member or worse yet the telephone book or internet. And
let’s face it - how does anyone really know whether a
contractor is good or not. The average homeowner requesting
a contractors’ service knows almost nothing about the
repair and feels unqualified to assess the quality of the
workmanship. Similarly, trying to find the time to meet with
contractors can interfere with work and schedules.

Chimney
Repair
A client recently contacted me regarding a stone that had
fallen from his exterior chimney onto his outside hot tub.
He was at a loss as to how to approach the problem. He
called me to assess the damage and provide guidance. |
 |
|
After reviewing the
damage, I was able to identify the problem and the mechanism that
caused the incident. I was also able to tell him how the damaged
chimney needed to be repaired so it would not happen again, and to
prevent further complications in the home from the accident.
After educating the homeowner, he was then able to contact his
insurance company with specific information that expedited the
repair of his home. Additionally, I contacted the appropriate
contractors, set up the appointments, oversaw that the repair
process was done quickly and proficiently, Thereby relieving the
homeowner of any stress and ensuring that it was done correctly. |
Mold Assessment
Similarly,
another client was about to start a major basement renovation and
their general contractor had encountered black mold.
|
|
|
She
was
concerned about how to approach the construction. I was called to
evaluate the extent of the mold problem, and help guide the
contractor on methods to eradicate the mold safely and completely
so that the remodeling progress could continue. I was further
hired on to educate the homeowner on how to prepare and protect
the remainder of the home from the construction site
contamination.

Window
Replacement not quite right
For example,
one client had all the windows in their older turn-of the
–century home replaced. After the job was complete there were
still significant drafts from many of the windows. |
 |
|
It appeared
that the instillation had been done correctly, but when replacing
the windows, the contractor had ignored (or not mentioned to the
homeowner) that there was no insulation between the window panes
and the house frame. A simple issue that could have been prevented
and could have saved the homeowner a tremendous amount of money in
heating.
So despite a
good contractor, who knew his trade well, problems can occur. Had
I been hired to assess the repair from the beginning, I would have
been able to see the big-picture and troubleshoot potential
problems. Thus, insulation would have been installed at the time
of replacing the windows. Now, the client needs to decide whether
to continue having outrageous heating bills or have the window
casing removed and insulation placed in the void of the framing-a
much more complicated and expensive solution.
